Pine Grove Public School hosts Star Wars-themed math night
THE SUBJECT of mathematics was the star during Pine Grove Public School’s recent math night for 500 parents and students, which centered on ‘May the Fourth Be You’ – a take on the popular Star Wars film.
The Star Wars-themed math night was held during Education Week in early May to “provide a fun and interactive learning experience for Pine Grove students and their families,” explained Pine Grove Vice-principal Shawn Darby. “Parents learned how students approach mathematics through problem solving. Parents went home with ideas of how to make math part of their child's everyday life.”
Students at the Oakville school were given themed passports to guide them through the various stations that addressed each of the five strands of the math curriculum, Darby explained. He said parents were excited to see many students leading math activities.
“They expressed how excited their children were to come to school in the evening to demonstrate what they knew about math,” Darby said.
